In 1989, the United States was in the grip of hysteria as the Natural Resources Defense Council led a campaign to get Alar banned. Although the substance was never banned (contrary to some environmentalist revisonists such as Paul Ehrlich), the manufacturer did withdraw Alar from the market after the enormous negative publicity. This was unnecessary as the balance of evidence in 1989 and today is that Alar is safe and the media hysteria was just that.
