European Ignorance About Genetic Engineering

Europe is the world hotbed of opposition to genetically modified foods. Although the level of anti-GM food activism in the United States is growing, it’s nowhere near what it is in Europe. Unfortunately a poll of European’s scientific knowledge suggests some of the general opposition to GM foods might be due to sheer ignorance on the part of European consumers about basic biology.

In the poll, respondents were asked to agree or disagree with the statement, “Ordinary tomatoes do not contain genes, while genetically modified tomatoes do.” As reported in New Scientist, fully 35 percent of those polled agreed with this statement.

As Dr. Dean Edell put it for HealthCentral.Com:

Genetically-modified foods are the wave of the future and can help stamp out hunger and disease. If Europe drags its feet in this area, it will find itself behind the times. It would be a shame if ignorance were to cause that to happen.
